The Costa Cálida is one of mainland Spain's mildest winter regions. Mountains inland shelter the lagoon from the cold fronts that bring grey weeks further north.
It is also much cheaper than the Canary Islands in peak winter, while keeping the convenience of mainland Spain: easy driving access, big supermarkets and normal Spanish town life.
What you give up: ocean surf and nightlife. What you get: empty fairways, calm-water walks, lagoon sunsets and a real Spanish town.
